Flu FactsEvery year in the United States, on average: 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications about 36,000 people die from flu.
Flu symptoms include fever, headache, chills body aches, tiredness, dry cough, sore throat and nasal congestion. Usually cold symptoms are milder and people with a cold are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections or hospitalizations.
Flu is spread when a person who has the flu coughs, sneezes, or speaks and sends the flu virus into the air. The virus enters the nose, throat or lungs of a person and multiplies. . Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.
If you get the flu: rest, drink plenty of liquids and avoid alcohol and tobacco. If possible, stay home from work, school and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. Complications of flu can include bacterial pneumonia, dehydration and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes. Children may get sinus problems and ear infections. |
